Historically at the crossroads of Europe and the Mediterranean, the Alpes-Maritimes has held and reinforced its position in the world, by transforming itself into a crossroads for art, design and technology. Spearheading the growth of information technologies in the region is the Sophia-Antipolis Business and Science Park situated just outside Nice and 15 km from Nice Airport. Founded in 1969 by Senator Pierre Laffitte and industrialist Jérome Monod, the park, located on 2,300 hectares of forest land of which two thirds are environmentally protected, is now ranked among the top ten technology centres in the world and was named after Sophie Glikman-Tourmarkine, the wife of Senator Laffitte.
